Lada Sport’s Gabriele Tarquini was fastest in today’s testing session at Slovakiaring. After several lead changes, the Italian eventually broke the 2’05 barrier, finishing ahead of Honda Racing’s Norbert Michelisz, with Nicky Catsburg putting his Lada in third.

The session started with debris on track out of Turn 2, which did not prevent drivers from setting quick lap times. Honda initially led with Norbert Michelisz ahead of Tiago Monteiro, with Tarquini third ahead of Rob Huff.

Soon after that the Italian jumped up to the lead, but the Polestar Cyan Racing Volvos started looking stronger and stronger until Fredrik Ekblom set the fastest time before being beaten by team-mate Thed Bjork.

In the dying moments of the session Tarquini eventually clocked an unbeatable lap time, with Norbert Michelisz not too far at 0.2s and Nicky Catsburg a further tenth shy of his team-mate. Bjork’s time was enough to leave him in fourth ahead of José María López’s Citroën C-Elysée, the double champion only setting a handful of competitive lap times.

Tiago Monteiro finished sixth ahead of Hugo Valente, who confirmed Lada’s strong form in the session. Fredrik Ekblom was eighth ahead of Castrol Honda’s Rob Huff, with John Filippi completing the top ten for Campos Racing in his Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1, also emerging as the fastest WTCC Trophy driver.

Despite spending some time in the top five, Yvan Muller eventually finished outside the top ten in eleventh ahead of ROAL Motorsport’s Tom Coronel.

WTCC returnee James Thompson went no further than 16th in his Munnich Motorsport Cruze, which was his first outing in a TC1 car since last year.

Action will resume tomorrow with Free Practice 1, which is scheduled for 8.45 local time.
